Quade joins calls for statewide rent, mortgage suspension

State Rep. Crystal Quade, D-Springfield, joined calls for leniency in mortgage and rent payments amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Kansas City-based KC Tenants organization is making a statewide push for Gov. Mike Parson to order a suspension on rent and mortgage payments for all public and private properties; enact an eviction and foreclosure moratorium; ban utility shutdowns and mandate universal service; and provide homes and expand services for the homeless, according to a news release.

Quade said she and many of her colleagues support KC Tenants' demands.

"Knowing what the pandemic was going to do to those who live paycheck to paycheck or small-business owners who will struggle, the House Democrats tried to move some of these policies and were met with pushback," Quade said in the release. "This is a public health crisis and I urge Gov. Parson and my legislative colleagues to act with urgency, to meet with folks impacted and to ensure that Missouri tenants are protected and the people of Missouri are kept safe.”

Springfield landlord Misty McIntosh, who owns six properties with her husband, is among supporters of the requests by KC Tenants and is foregoing rent costs for those who can’t afford them amid the coronavirus pandemic.

McIntosh said "it's not the right thing to do" to boot tenants who can't pay their rent amid the coronavirus. But she said she's worried about covering costs related to the properties, as well.

"Our government needs to step in. Even though my husband and I are committed to doing the right thing, what about the other landlords who aren't?" said McIntosh, who's also an agent for Keller Williams Realty, in the release. "It's not the big, out-of-state, corporate landlords that are going to be hurting from this. It's people like me and my family.

"These protections need to be public policy – I don't want any other landlords giving me a bad name because they don't have a heart."

A request for comment from Parson's office was not returned by deadline.
