Community Foundation of the Ozarks Inc. on Friday awarded its second round of COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund grants.

Seven nonprofits were the beneficiaries, with total grants through the program now reaching around $180,000 after the first presentation on April 3.

Discovery Center of Springfield Inc. on April 10 received the most funding, at $40,000, according to a news release. The educational science center is now operating as a licensed child care facility, specifically designed for children of health care workers and first responders. Operating costs for the program are running up to $6,000 per day, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting.

In a virtual grant presentation Friday, Bridget Dierks, CFO's vice president of programs, encouraged others to donate to the Discovery Center, saying “expenses of the endeavor are very significant.”

The other nonprofits that received grants are:
• Council of Churches of the Ozarks Inc., $10,000 to support its Crosslines food pantry in Springfield;
• Russell House Phelps County Family Crisis Services, $8,700 to provide emergency quarantine domestic violence shelter services in the Rolla area;
• Good Samaritan of the Ozarks, $6,300 to support food pantries in the Waynesville and Fort Leonard Wood areas;
• Fair Acres Family YMCA, $5,000 to provide child care for “essential” employees in the Carthage area;
• Ozarks Family YMCA Inc., $5,000 to help “essential” employees in Seymour with child care; and
• Southeast Missouri Food Bank Inc., $5,000 to supply mobile food pantries in the Cape Girardeau area.

CFO last month pledged $1 million in grant funding to help those impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. Donors since then have contributed nearly $230,000 to the COVID-19 and related funds. Additionally, individuals and organizations with charitable funds established through CFO have donated more than $700,000 to nonprofits amid the COVID-19 outbreak, according to the release.
