2023 Health Care Champions Health Care Organization – Midsize: Eustasis Psychiatric and Addiction Health

Posted online

Officials at Eustasis Psychiatric and Addiction Health say the team is dedicated to providing timely and comprehensive psychiatric and addiction care, and the work is revolutionizing how mental health services are accessed and delivered in the region.

“We have developed a same-day model that has drastically reduced the emergency room burden and the wait time overall in the Ozark community for an appointment with a psychiatrist or qualified advanced practice provider,” says Breanna Jain, Eustasis co-founder and CEO, and a nurse practitioner.

Eustasis’ same-day health care model is a direct answer to the traditional wait times for psychiatric care, which Jain says can span several months.

“Our story is well known in that even as health care providers ourselves, we had been given an astronomical wait time for our own special needs child and felt powerless to help him. We thought how much could be done for others in the same situation, if we provided a genuine option for all patients to get same-day medical treatment for psychiatric care – and never looked back,” Jain says.

Since Eustasis’ opening in 2018, officials say residents in the region have been able to obtain appointments within hours, ensuring that critical care is available when it’s most needed.

“Our first day, we saw nine patients, and today we are serving thousands a week between our Missouri and Arkansas locations,” Jain says.

Focused on innovations, Eustasis has introduced advanced treatment modalities, such as Spravato-brand esketamine and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation to treat depression and other mental health conditions. These treatments were previously reserved for larger metropolitan areas, according to Jain.

In addition, the organization has collaborated with local schools to offer prompt ADHD evaluations.

Despite the organization’s rapid growth, Eustasis’ first few years of operation haven’t been without challenges testing the team.

“There are days when it is hard to stay operating, when you face massive staffing shortages, the pressures of running your own company while still seeing patients, attending to our own family and meeting the increasing demands of the community. But you realize if you are not here, the patients will have nowhere else to go, and they need you. And as a health care provider, that is what drives you,” Jain says.

In a bid to eradicate the stigma surrounding mental health, Eustasis leaders actively engage with the community. Through news segments, articles and speaking engagements, they have championed mental health awareness.

“Mental health issues can impact the entire population, and there is no reason to be ashamed about that. It is no different than any other condition,” Jain says.
