Project description: Horace Mann Elementary is getting a precast concrete safe room addition that will also provide a new gymnasium and music room. Work so far has included demolition of existing construction and minor interior renovations, plus the addition for the safe room and a connecting corridor linking it to the main building, according to information provided by DeWitt & Associates officials. Construction will include a prestressed concrete wall and roof system, concrete and masonry finishes, metal stud walls, and an aluminum storefront and entrances, plus interior finish work. The project is funded by Proposition S, a $220 million bond issue passed by voters in April 2023. Similar storm shelters are in the works at five other elementary schools, and the project also includes safety and security upgrades at all schools, new construction of Pipkin and Reed middle schools and the renovation of Pershing School, according to the SPS website.
