“We’re in the people helping business.”

Larry Peterson, Executive Director, Habitat for Humanity of Springfield Missouri, says there are some misconceptions about the nonprofit group. While they do accept donations they are not a charity in the traditional sense. Habitat does not give away houses; buyers must invest “sweat equity” with the organization to purchase a home. This means working 250 to 350 hours to earn the right to buy their house, which helps people take ownership in the project. Peterson says they need other organizations and companies to partner with them in their Woodland Height’s neighborhood revitalization program. Habitat’s Restore helps them pay the bills so grants and donations can go directly to the group’s mission of helping people.
