Verizon reports better-than-expected subscriber data

Verizon Communications reported better-than-expected wireless subscriber numbers in the first quarter.

The company lost 68,000 monthly bill-paying wireless phone subscribers during the quarter, which is typically a soft period for the industry after the holidays.

Analysts expected a loss of 100,000. In the same quarter last year, Verizon lost 127,000 subscribers.
