Springfield lands BMX tournament with $1.3M economic impact

Posted online

A national BMX tournament is making its way to Springfield and bringing more than $1 million in expected economic impact with it.

The USA BMX National Championship Series event is slated to be held in the Queen City next year, according to a news release. The Springfield Sports Commission, Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau, Ozark Empire Fairgrounds and other organizations partnered on the effort to secure the tournament.

"USA BMX will bring thousands of people to Springfield, and the economic impact is tremendous. It helps support the city’s restaurants, hotels, retail establishments and attractions," CVB President and CEO Mark Hecquet said in the release.

The economic impact for the event is estimated at nearly $1.3 million. The event is scheduled March 1-3 at the fairgrounds' Wilson Logistics Arena.

The $25 million arena is nearing completion at the fairgrounds, and events are starting to pile up in anticipation for a 2024 launch, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting.

“Construction of the 100,000-square-foot, $25 million arena played a major role in getting the national event booked in the city,” said Lance Kettering, executive director of the Sports Commission, in the release. "Without Wilson Logistics Arena and the support of the team at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds, this opportunity would not be possible."
