The former CEO of a hospital operator in northern Kansas City was charged for allegedly participating in a $1.4 billion billing scheme.

The indictment alleges former chief executive Jorge Perez, 60, and nine others submitted fraudulent billing claims at rural hospitals via EmpowerHMS. One of the hospitals was Putnam County Memorial Hospital in Unionville, according to the Kansas City Business Journal.

EmpowerHMS reportedly ran out of funds after insurers began refusing to pay for questionable billing.
