Finland, Sweden apply to join NATO

Finland and Sweden formally submitted applications to join the NATO military alliance.

Their admission requires approval by all 30 NATO members, as well as ratification by their parliaments.

In the move triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, ratification may be complicated by Turkey, according to The Guardian. Officials in Turkey said their objections are related to Sweden and Finland’s support for members of Kurdish militant groups.
