Battlefield brewery sets launch next week

Posted online

Two months after Springfield’s 11th craft brewery opened, the first one in Battlefield is on the verge of debuting.

Wire Road Brewing Co. LLC plans to open Jan. 17 at 4453 Timbercreek Ave., said Jeff Birchler, who co-owns the venture with wife Angela and friends Kary and Deanna Walker.

Birchler said finishing touches are ongoing at the 3,600-square-foot brewery, which is less than a mile south of Republic Road on land near Highway FF and Farm Road 172. He said the project’s cost will finish just shy of $2 million. Nesbitt Construction Inc. served as general contractor for the brewery designed by Esterly Schneider & Associates Inc.

“We’ve been excited for this to happen for a long time now. It’s finally here,” Birchler said. “We’re ready to open the doors and show the place off to people.”

The new brewery includes indoor seating for up to 90 and a covered heated patio area that can seat at least another 60 people, he said. An outdoor space to accommodate up to three food trucks also is in place. He said the food truck schedule for opening week is still being finalized.

Wire Road features 20 taps inside and another 10 outside. Birchler said 10 in-house beers will be available on opening day, including a farmhouse ale dubbed Limestone Cowboy and a hybrid lager and ale called Cool Hand Kolsch. Local brewers will also be featured, with Spring Branch Kombucha set to fill a couple of taps and 4 by 4 Brewing Co. LLC supplying one of its Basic Batch hard seltzers, he said. Wine, tea and coffee supplied by another Battlefield business, Copper Canyon Coffee Roasters, also are planned for the drink lineup.

Birchler said the 20-employee brewery aims to draw customers in the morning with its coffee products and pastries, some of which will be provided by Kimberling City-based Simply Baked LLC.

“We want people to be able to come in and sit down, whether it’s over a pint of beer or cup of coffee, and engage in some conversation and just relax,” he said, adding Wire Road plans to open weekdays at 6:30 a.m. and 7 a.m. on the weekends.

Birchler estimated Wire Road will produce roughly 1,000 barrels annually to start.

“We don’t have any plans to engage with a large-scale distributor anytime soon,” he said. “We’re focusing all of our efforts on the brewery and providing quality beer right now.”

The Battlefield brewery’s opening comes on the heels of Banter Brewing Co. launching in November 2021 at 330 W. Plainview Road, about a mile south of the James River Freeway interchange.

Wire Road isn’t the only brewery outside Springfield on tap to open this year. Construction started last fall for 4 by 4’s 12,000-square-foot brewery, taproom and event center near Fremont Hills Country Club. A November or December opening is targeted, according to a Dec. 2 post on 4 by 4’s Facebook page.
