Plaza Tire plans 2 new shops after March market entry

Posted online
Following its first Springfield store opening in March, Cape Girardeau-based Plaza Tire Service has plans for two other shops in the city.

The company is targeting an August launch for a store at 3820 W. Sunshine St., located immediately adjacent to the Springfield Plaza development, said Plaza Tire Marketing Manager Brian McMillan. Declining to disclose the company’s investment in the project, McMillan said construction is underway on the new build.

Plaza Tire bought the roughly 1-acre parcel from Springfield Plaza, said Tom Rankin, co-owner of the $78.5 million development. He said Springfield Plaza parcels range from $18.50 to $22.50 per square foot, and an acre is 43,560 square feet.

Additionally, McMillan confirmed Plaza Tire bought a high-turnover property at 2811 S. Campbell Ave.

“I don’t really have details on that one at this point,” he said. “There’s not really a timeline in place there.”

The South Campbell property is home to a building that’s housed the likes of La Mision, Tony's Italian Cafe & Bar, Nipa and Thai House in recent years. The property has a 2017 taxable appraised value of $497,900, according to the Greene County assessor.

In March, Plaza Tire opened its first Springfield store at 2867 E. Sunshine St., next door to the Price Cutter’s health food concept Ruby’s Market.

Plaza Tire operates more than 45 stores in Missouri, and the rest are scattered across Arkansas, Illinois and Kentucky. Owned by brothers Mark and Scott Rhodes, whose father founded the company in 1963, Plaza Tire buys tires direct from manufacturers. Among its 15 tire brands, the top sellers are Michelin, Bridgestone, Falken and Nokian, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.
