Assemblies of God votes for leadership change

The Assemblies of God yesterday selected a new general superintendent after its current leader failed to gain re-election traction.

The Springfield-based organization chose Douglas Clay to succeed George Wood. The latter withdrew from consideration after three ballots failed to produce the necessary two-thirds majority to re-elect him, according to a news release.

“There is a sense in the room a new direction is needed,” Wood said during Assemblies of God’s 57th general council meeting in Anaheim, California. “I don’t take that as a personal affront. In the course of wisdom, I ask you to look in another direction for general superintendent. I respectfully request my name be withdrawn.”

Wood, who turns 76 in September, was elected in 2007 as the organization’s 12th general superintendent. He succeeded Thomas Trask.

Wood is credited with leading the Christian denomination in creating AG Trust, which has raised more than $23 million for church planting and revitalization, scholarships, and new initiatives and resources. During his tenure, Assemblies of God also launched Church Multiplication Network, which led to 3,307 new churches added over the last decade, according to the release. With over 67 million members worldwide, Assemblies of God is the largest Pentecostal denomination, according to its website.

“I will never fill the shoes but build on the great foundation you and others have built,” said Clay, referencing Wood, in the release.

Clay, general treasurer for Assemblies of God, has past experience working as executive presbyter from the Great Lakes region, superintendent of the Ohio Ministry Network, Ohio youth director and national youth director.
