Assemblies of God elects new superintendent

Posted online
Springfield-based Assemblies of God elected the Rev. George O. Wood as its 12th general superintendent on Friday at the denomination’s 52nd General Council, held in Indianapolis.

Wood has been general secretary AG since 1993. He replaces Thomas E. Trask, who in July announced he would step down from the post this month after serving half of a four-year term.

Wood has a doctoral degree in pastoral theology from Fuller Theological Seminary in California and a juris doctorate from Western State University College of Law, also in California. He did his undergraduate work at Evangel University, where he also was director of spiritual life and student life from 1965–1971.

His other past positions include assistant superintendent of AG’s Southern California District for six years and pastor of Newport-Mesa Christian Center in California for 17 years.

Wood is the author of seven books. He also is an attorney and a member of the California State Bar.

Other newly elected leaders of AG are:

· L. Alton Garrison, who was named assistant general superintendent; he has served as executive director of U.S. missions for AG since 2005;

· John Palmer, who was named general secretary; he has been executive presbyter of the north central region since 2005;

· Zollie L. Smith Jr., who was named executive director of U.S. missions; he is executive presbyter of the ethnic fellowships and executive secretary of the New Jersey district; and

· L. John Bueno, who was re-elected to a four-year term as executive director of world missions.

AG has about 3 million members and adherents in the United States.[[In-content Ad]]
