John Lopez, military veteran and founder/director of K9s for Camo, says using prisoners to train service dogs helps more than veterans. Lopez says only two of the original 10 trainers have returned to prison. The usual rate of return for prisoners is 80%. “I think we’re making an impact there,” says Lopez. “Even if offenders don’t work with dogs when they get out, they still had a new life skill.”
