Summit Preparatory breaks ground on new campus

Posted online

The Summit Preparatory School broke ground Friday on its new campus at a former Mercy fitness center.

Base Construction & Management LLC is the general contractor, and Hood-Rich Architecture is the architect for the $610,000 renovation project at 202 E. Walnut Lawn St., according to a news release. Springfield City Council last year gave the green light for the project when it agreed to rezone the property, thus triggering Summit Prep’s purchase of the building from Youngblood Auto Group. The school is moving from 2155 W. Chesterfield Blvd.

Between the purchase and renovations, Summit Prep expects to spend up to $5 million, according to Springfield Business Journal reporting.

Youngblood Auto owner John Youngblood participated in the groundbreaking ceremony. He’s also listed in the release under project financing and capital donors with Guaranty Bank and The Schneider Foundation.

Crews expect to finalize the renovation project by June 30 to start classes at the nearly 40,000-square-foot property in August during the 2018-19 academic year.

Features of the project include solar energy plans, flexible classrooms and shared collaboration spaces, as well as 4 acres of outdoor green space for a track, playground and garden, according to the release.

The school’s current campus, at 2155 W. Chesterfield Blvd., had been owned by Bob Noble before transferring to OakStar Bank in May 2017. OakStar officials have declined to disclose the bank’s plans for the facility, and no building permits are on file with the city.

At the new Walnut Lawn Street campus, Mercy closed its center in 2015. Youngblood Auto sought to expand east and build a garage at the Walnut Lawn parcel and at 3410 S. Campbell Ave.
