Springfield starts year ahead of forecast in taxes

Springfield’s 1 percent sales tax check from the Missouri Department of Revenue came in above budget to start the city’s fiscal year.

The $4.7 million check is roughly 6 percent higher than officials’ $4.4 million forecast for July. The check represents sales processed by the state in June from transactions made primarily in May, according to a news release.

The June check was 10 percent lower than expected.

“It appears much of the backlog of unprocessed vendor remittances noted with last month's distribution have been processed with this latest distribution to the city,” Finance Director David Holtmann said in the release.

The city ended fiscal 2017 with $43.4 million in tax collections from the state. That was 4 percent lower than the $45.4 million projection.

Sales taxes fund vital Springfield services, including Police and Fire Department operations. Roughly 56 percent of revenue in the city’s general fund comes from sales taxes.
