Springfield awarded $6.4M for wastewater improvements

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources this morning announced millions of dollars in financial assistance for the city of Springfield to upgrade its wastewater collection system.

The nearly $6.4 million in funding comprises a roughly $4.9 million loan and a $1.5 million grant through the Clean Water State Revolving Fund, according to a news release.

“To stay strong, every community needs public utilities that can meet both current and future capacity demands,” Gov. Mike Parson said in the release. “We want to help communities like Springfield keep their water treatment systems up to date and operating effectively. Strong communities make a strong state.”

The funding is earmarked for the city of Springfield to conduct a major rehabilitation of its public sewer system using cured in-place pipe lining to reduce unwanted inflow and infiltration of groundwater and stormwater, DNR officials say. The project is expected to increase the system's capacity to handle peak flow events, thereby reducing sewer overflows.
