Over the Edge tops $300K goal by $1

If everyone jumped off a building, would you do it too? This past weekend, 80 people said yes – all to benefit The Child Advocacy Center Inc.

As part of the second-annual Over the Edge fundraiser, volunteers rappelled down Sky Eleven in downtown Springfield on June 3 to help raise $300,001 for the nonprofit that works with victims of child abuse and neglect.

“We were very pleased with the turnout,” said CAC Development Associate Lisa Langley. “Our rappeller numbers were up and we hit our goal.”

Rappelling was just part of the day’s activities. A run, bike race and dinner helped bring in $292,179, shy of last year’s inaugural haul of $320,000. With a goal of $300,000, pushing CAC over the edge was a $7,822 donation from an anonymous donor.

“A longtime friend of the CAC called and wanted to put us over the top,” Langley said. “That put us over by $1.”

On June 3, 74 people rappelled down the north side of the 10-story apartment building. Each of the participants were asked to raise at least $1,000 – the cost per child who visits the CAC – but many went above the $10,000 and $5,000 thresholds. Another six media members, including Springfield Business Journal Sales Manager Todd Brierly, went over the Sky Eleven wall the prior day.

BKD LLP Managing Partner John Wanamaker was the event’s top fundraiser, bringing in $11,545.

Others who crossed the $10,000 mark – dubbed Super Edgers by CAC – were David Foss with Jack Henry & Associates Inc.; Nancy O’Reilly with Women Connect4Good Inc.; Dianna Devore with Design Fabrication; Tom Peebles with Carnahan, Evans, Cantwell & Brown; and Greene County Presiding Commissioner Bob Cirtin.

Halifax, Nova Scotia-based Over The Edge’s events average $100,000 in funds raised, according to SBJ archives. In total nationwide, more than 25,000 people have gone over the edge, raising over $50 million since 2004.
