Grants from the federal government and a local foundation are giving Ozarks Technical Community College the buying power to enhance its Table Rock campus nursing program.
The $83,278 in grants — $61,778 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and $21,500 from the Skaggs Foundation — will fund the purchase of training mannequins and equipment to create a hospital replica at OTC’s Hollister satellite campus, according to a news release.
“This is great news for our students, the health care providers that rely on our skilled graduates and for the Table Rock-area economy,” OTC Table Rock President Cliff Davis said in the release. “Providing our citizens with advanced training opportunities will improve the health and wellness of our local communities.”
Currently, nursing students at the Table Rock campus must travel to Springfield for specialty training and patient care simulation work. Students at the campus — with a capacity of 40 licensed practical nurses and 24 registered nurses — will be able to use the mannequins that simulate human qualities. Local first responders, community members and high school students also will have access to the mannequins for life-saving training.
