For the sixth time since it cruised into the Fortune 500, O’Reilly Automotive Inc. (Nasdaq: ORLY) improved its rank.
The Springfield-based auto parts retailer moved up 19 spots to No. 323 on this year’s list. Since cracking the Fortune 500 in 2010, O’Reilly Auto has advanced in all but one year — when it was flat in 2012, according to Springfield Business Journal archives.
Ranked based on revenue, Fortune also publishes the companies’ profits, market value and employee counts. The overall Fortune 500 companies have $12 trillion in revenues, $890 billion in profits, $19 trillion in market value and 28.2 million employees.
O’Reilly Automotive’s contribution: $8.6 billion in revenue, $1.03 billion in profits, a $24.7 billion market value as of March 31 and nearly 58,400 employees.
The Springfield company is flanked by Lake Forest, Illinois-based motor vehicles and parts company Tenneco, at No. 322, and Omaha, Nebraska-based engineering and construction firm Peter Kiewit Sons, at No. 324.
In Missouri, O’Reilly Automotive placed sixth after:
• No. 22, Express Scripts Holding Co. (Nasdaq: ESRX), with $100.3 billion in revenue;
• No. 66, Centene Corp. (NYSE: CNC), $40.7 billion;
• No. 139, Emerson Electric Co. (NYSE: EMR), $20.3 billion;
• No. 204, Monsanto Co. (NYSE: MON), $13.5 billion; and
• No. 246, Reinsurance Group of America Inc. (NYSE: RGA), $11.5 billion.
Outside the coveted top 500, locally, Carthage-based manufacturer Leggett & Platt Inc. (NYSE: LEG) ranked 613th with $3.8 billion in revenue.
On the overall list, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) placed first for the fifth-straight year with $485.9 billion in revenue, followed by Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE: BRK.A), $223.6 billion, and Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL), $215.6 billion.
