First recipient of US patent for software dies

Martin Goetz, the recipient of the first U.S. patent for software, has died. He was 93.

Goetz received the patent in 1968 for data-sorting software for mainframes.

Goetz' "sorting system" is believed to have been the first software product to be sold commercially.
