Fannie Mae officials announced the company will seek $3.7 billion from taxpayers after reporting a $6.5 billion net loss in its most recent quarter.
Under government conservatorship since the 2008 financial crisis, Fannie Mae officials said the Federal Housing Finance Agency, which oversees its operations, would pursue the taxpayer funds.
Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, of the House Financial Services Committee, called the proposal a “bailout request.”
“Americans deserve better,” he said in a statement. “That’s why Congress can and should enact comprehensive housing finance reform this year to create a sustainable housing system.”
