CoxHealth strikes new deal with Anthem

CoxHealth penned a deal with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield to extend insurance coverage to southwest Missouri patients.

The agreement could be a boon for CoxHealth patients outside Greene County, where Anthem still offers coverage under the Affordable Care Act. In September, Anthem announced it was scaling back its Missouri marketplace coverage, including cancelation of service in Greene County.

“This means that CoxHealth has a presence on the health insurance marketplace in counties where Anthem offers coverage,” CoxHealth spokeswoman Kaitlyn McConnell said via email.

ACA coverage would be available to CoxHealth patients in some counties, though it’s unclear which ones.

CoxHealth customers in its home county of Greene still have no access to ACA coverage. McConnell said CoxHealth is still negotiating a deal with Ambetter Health, a health insurance marketplace owned by Centene Corp. Through Mercy Hospital Springfield, Ambetter is the only local insurance coverage option under the ACA, according to SBJ reporting.

Beyond its ACA implications, the deal with Anthem guarantees CoxHealth patients will have access to the insurer’s Blue Access, Blue Preferred, Pathway and Medicare Advantage networks, according to a news release.

CoxHealth in December signed an agreement with Aetna Inc. (NYSE: AET) to provide insurance coverage to Springfield-area businesses.
