Artist studios to open at Junior League's longtime home

Junior League of Springfield, Missouri Inc. has sold its longtime home.

The nonprofit women's community service organization is closing on the sale of its headquarters building at 2574 E. Bennett St. today, according to a news release. The purchase price was not disclosed in the release.

The buyer, New Moon Studio Space LLC, plans to use the building to create dedicated studio space for local artists, JLS officials say.

"This cultural and economic development will enhance Springfield in a spirit that aligns with the JLS commitment to our community," officials with the nonprofit said in the release. "The decision to move the JLS headquarters was made to optimize efficiency, enhance capabilities to better serve members and fulfill the mission, and ensure spaces are accessible for everyone in the community. JLS is genuinely excited about this relocation and the breath of fresh air it presents for the League and its members."

JLS on July 17 penned a one-year lease agreement with the Ozark Trails Council of the Boy Scouts of America to occupy space at 1616 S. Eastgate Ave.

"Partnering with Junior League of Springfield to share office space is a win for both organizations. We share the same values and work to grow our members in leadership and service to community. I can’t think of a better group to be associated with," Ozark Trails Council CEO John Feick said in the release.

All JLS operations are slated to occur at the new location starting today, according to the release.

The buyer of the current JLS building, New Moon Studio Space run by Kate Baird and Mike Stevens, previously was eyeing the former Doling Elementary School on West Atlantic Street for its plans, according to past reporting.

JLS has operated at the East Bennett building since 1983, according to the release. The building previously housed Oak Grove School.
