Jana Daugherty is the business development director for Butler, Rosenbury & Partners, but these days, her mind is on cheese.
Daugherty and her husband, Chris, opened the Cheddar Block, a gourmet food shop specializing in artisan and gourmet cheese.
“It is truly an exciting process and we are learning on a daily basis. It is a lot of stress but also a lot of fun,” Daugherty said. “I would encourage anyone who has a dream to go for it.”
At BRP, Daugherty is in charge of all business development efforts for both the Springfield office and the recently opened office in Phoenix. Her duties include developing and implementing marketing plans and budgets, oversight of all graphic and marketing materials, preparing client proposals and developing leads for the firm.
“We are in a growth mode, and seeking new projects for the company is a continual process,” Daugherty said, noting that creating growth opportunities for her fellow team members also is a key goal.
She also has goals as a small-business owner, and she’s mindful of the work that is required.
“As owners of the store, we are essentially responsible for everything,” she said.
Daugherty is a member of the Springfield, Joplin and Branson chambers of commerce and the North Springfield Betterment Association. She also volunteers for Children’s Miracle Network and is a volunteer youth volleyball coach.
Daugherty also is a member of the local Ladies Who Launch group, which encourages female entrepreneurs. Leader Ruth Shyrack gave her a book, “Live What You Love,” by Bob and Melinda Blanchard, and it was the source of an important lesson.
“The message of the book is that life is short, so you should do something you love,” Daugherty said. “Don’t be afraid to go for it; take a chance and the rewards can be great.”
