Wine Review: Give kosher wines a try

Posted online

As Jewish people have spread across the world, kosher wines have followed with them.

What is a kosher wine? For a wine to be considered kosher, which translates as “clean,” it must be made by Orthodox Jewish people whose work and workplace is under the critical scrutiny of a rabbi. That rabbi must confirm that all kosher laws have been strictly adhered to. That said, kosher wines largely are not much different than others made worldwide.

Galil Mountain 2021 Rose ($21)
With a beautiful pink color and delicate aroma, the 2021 Galil Mountain Rose exhibits an aromatic blend of strawberry, raspberry, grapefruit and red apple fruit characters, along with a background of spices. This is a nice wine that serves as a pleasant respite from the usual Concord reds.

Mount Hermon 2021 Indigo Red Wine ($18)
This is a deeply colored red wine that blends syrah and cabernet sauvignon in which the individual flavors of spice, smoke, earth, black tea and black pepper are apparent and presented right up front in the aroma, the flavor and in the finish. It’s an excellent choice for a traditional red wine on your table any time of year.

Galili Mountain Syrah 2020 ($21)
Here is a beautiful wine that reinforces America's new love affair with syrah wines. It is grand, well balanced, intense in color and accentuates the aromas of ripe summer fruit, dark raisins, spice and just a hint of chocolate. The flavor is a melding of cherries, plums, vanilla, herbs and a touch of earthiness. I will add that this is among the finest syrah wines that I have tasted from the 2020 vintage from anywhere in the world.

Golan Heights 2021 Yarden Rose ($18)
This rose is slightly different than the Galil Mountain 2021 Rose in that it is lighter in color and thus tends to bend more toward a white wine than a red. This rose displays a pale copper color and the prominent aromas of strawberry, raspberry, watermelon and flowers. These aromas follow through to the flavor where they remain on the palate for a long time. Either of the rose wines reviewed will not disappoint; it is just a matter of which one suits your taste.
