Wilson's Creek National Battlefield has an economic impact effect for the local community in the tens of millions of dollars, according to a recently released National Park Service report.

The report found the national park in Republic at 5242 S. State Hwy ZZ contributed $28.7 million to the local economy in 2023, according to a news release.

That includes $21.1 million in spending by visitors in communities near the park that supported 311 local jobs. Some 317,000 visitors were attracted to Wilson's Creek National Battlefield in 2023.

“People come to Wilson’s Creek to learn about the Trans-Mississippi theater of the Civil War, to commemorate and reflect on a difficult period of our history and to enjoy the recreational benefits throughout the site,” said Sarah Cunningham, superintendent of Wilson's Creek National Battlefield, in the release. “We recognize tourism as a critical driver to our local economies."

The local data was included in the National Park Service's 2023 National Park Visitor Spending Effects report. The overall report found 325.5 million visitors spent $26.4 billion in communities near national parks last year. That spending supported 415,400 jobs, provided $19.4 billion in labor income and $55.6 billion in economic output to the U.S. economy.

Lodging and restaurants fared the best among industries impacted by the parks' economic impact.

The Springfield Daily Citizen was first to report on the economic impact data at Wilson's Creek National Battlefield.
