United Way of the Ozarks' second Day of Caring event of the year brought out more than 200 volunteers yesterday to complete service projects for local nonprofits.

American National, OakStar Bank and T-Mobile were among companies that participated in the event, which conducted outdoor projects at 10 locations, as well as 10 supply drives and three remote projects for area nonprofits, according to a news release. A second Day of Caring was added this year since the 2020 event was canceled; the first, which had more than 600 volunteers, was held June 17.

Nearly one-third of the participating volunteers assisted Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland by painting and building cabin platforms and clearing trails in Rogersville.

“Day of Caring ensures that girls from across the Ozarks can experience the outdoors in a fun and safe environment,” said Melisabeth Johnston, Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland resource development manager, in the release.

Outdoor projects also were conducted at locations including Fellows Lake and Kickapoo High School, with supply drives benefiting Great Circle, Springfield Public Schools and other organizations. Harmony House was one recipient of volunteer work through a remote project to create kits for its iCare domestic violence awareness campaign.

The release indicates the value of Day of Caring volunteer contributions in 2021 has totaled nearly $90,000. Volunteers are worth $24.14 per hour, according to Volunteer Hub.

“Day of Caring is a great way for people to connect and give back to our community,” said Greg Burris, president and CEO of United Way of the Ozarks, in the release. “So often we hear from people who want to engage in the community, but they just don’t know where to start. Day of Caring provides an easy on-ramp to volunteering in the community and seeing what a difference they can make."
