President Donald Trump appeared to cast doubt over an offer of talks with Democrats to end the shutdown after the Senate failed to pass a short-term funding measure for the fifth time late Monday.
The shutdown entered its seventh day Tuesday after the Senate voted 52-42 in favor of the Republican bill. However, Republicans need 60 votes–with just 53 senators.
Ahead of the vote, Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that talks with Democrats were taking place and that he would be willing to make a deal on healthcare subsidies for the 24 million Americans on Affordable Care Act health plans–a key sticking point in the political deadlock. “If we made the right deal. I’d make a deal, sure.”
