President Donald Trump has ordered the Treasury Department to stop minting pennies.
“Let’s rip the waste out of our great nation's budget, even if it’s a penny at a time," Trump said, noting that pennies “literally cost us more than 2 cents.”
U.S. Mint policy dictates that Congress, not the Treasury or the Federal Reserve, authorizes the manufacture of the nation’s coins.
