The Furologist launches in Rogersville

After accruing a decade of pet grooming experience working for others, a Rogersville woman opened a salon of her own this month.

Brittny Knapp launched The Furologist LLC on May 1 at 193 S. Marshall St., Ste. F, in Rogersville. It’s a first-time business ownership venture for Knapp, who worked the past four years at another Rogersville grooming company, The Pet Cottage LLC.

“I didn’t know I was going to love it so much,” Knapp said about starting as a pet groomer for Petco in Palm Desert, California, at 18 years old. “It just ended up turning into a career and that was about 10 years ago.”

Knapp said she pays $750 per month for a two-year lease with Marc Strecker of 193 S. Marshall Investors LLC. Startup costs for the 1,200-square-foot shop were roughly $12,000, she said.

“I wanted to have my own salon and knew I wasn’t going to be able to do it in California. It was going to be too expensive,” she said, noting she moved to Rogersville in 2016 to be closer to family.

Knapp is the lone employee at the shop, which offers dog baths, haircuts and add-on services, including nail filing and teeth brushing. Grooming package prices are based on dog breeds, sizes and coat type and length, she said. Prices range $45-$55 for small breeds, $55-$65 for medium-size dogs and $75-$100 for most large breeds.

“We want them to like grooming so we give them lots of treats, lots of playtime to desensitize them to the process and get them used to a life full of grooming,” she said of her furry clients. “I want them to be happy to be groomed.”
