St. George's Donuts today reopened its Sunshine Street store after a nearly two-month-long renovation doubled its size.
Nick St. George, owner of the 3628 E. Sunshine St. shop, said via email the eatery's square footage is now 2,400. He declined to disclose costs for the renovation, through which St. George's Donuts expanded into an adjacent suite in a multitenant center owned by Raga Properties LLC.
The Sunshine Street store closed for renovations on Jan. 1, according to a news release.
“To do it right, we had to shut down so we could totally gut the interior,” St. George said in the release. “There were a lot of issues after 25 years and we wanted to fix them all at once. It was looking old and tired.”
The expansion project included a larger kitchen, expanded display case, new flooring and paint, and a 22-foot mural.
Nick St. George purchased the Sunshine Street store from his mother, Katy St. George, in 2015, according to past reporting. He also owns the St. George’s Donuts in Ozark.
Founded in 1971, St. George’s Donuts also has shops on South National Avenue in Springfield and in Marshfield owned by Nick St. George's brothers.
Connected to Watkins Elementary School is a new storm shelter now under construction.
