Springfield Public Schools is conducting a series of leadership changes that officials say are designed to "reflect an alignment of operations and academic support with the district’s newly adopted strategic plan."

Six high-level moves were announced in a news release yesterday, as was the renaming of a district office.

“The 2023-2028 strategic plan was developed in collaboration with our entire community, including students, parents, employees and community members,” said SPS Superintendent Grenita Lathan, in the release. “The plan serves as the district's continuous school improvement plan. We are committed to the well-being of each student by providing high-quality academic opportunities and today’s announcement reflects support for that ongoing work.”

Bret Range, current executive director of student and school services, is being promoted to chief human resources officer, effective July 1. He'll succeed the retiring Bill Redinger.

Bruce Douglas, SPS' director of information technology, has been named chief information officer, an expanded role to oversee a newly aligned department that includes all district technology, according to the release. The promotion is effective July 1.

SPS has hired Rick Carpenter, current executive director of operations for the Center School District in Kansas City, to serve in the same role at SPS. On July 1, he'll succeed Travis Shaw, who is starting this summer as deputy superintendent of operations.

Katie Kensinger, current coordinator of college and career readiness for SPS, on July 1 is taking on the expanded role of director of college and career readiness, according to the release.

The changes announced yesterday additionally include a restructuring of the district's Office of Equity & Diversity.

Yvania Garcia-Pusateri, current chief equity and diversity officer, is moving to the role of college and career access specialist.

Michelle Gavel, who serves as the office's coordinator of equity and diversity, is moving to the role of director of student access and opportunity, effective July 1.

Gavel is slated to oversee the alignment of the Department of Student Access and Opportunity, formerly known as the Office of Equity & Diversity, according to the release.
