Springfield Little Theatre resumes live shows

Posted online

The show must go on – and online.

Springfield Little Theatre performers are taking the stage next month for “Deep in the Heart of Tuna” after postponing three productions in its 85th anniversary season. Theatergoers can watch the performance in-person at the historic Landers Theatre or catch a virtual show.

“Just as many people have told us they are not ready to come back have told us they are dying to come back,” said Marketing Director Megan Buchbinder. “That’s why we’re adding the streaming option.”

The two-person comedy stars SLT Executive Director Beth Domann and Mark Gideon, and is directed by Jamie Bower. Performances will run July 17-26. Seated tickets range from $20-$30 apiece, and a recording of a live show is available for $28.

For those who watch the show in person, Buchbinder said social distancing and face masks will be required, as well as temperature checks. In addition, concessions are closed for this production and enhanced cleaning procedures will follow each showing. Buchbinder estimated the theater’s capacity would be less than half of its regular 527-customer capacity.

“’Deep in the Heart of Tuna’ was the best one to reproduce because it’s a two-person cast and is a lot easier to put on,” she said. “We are still committed to producing the other shows.”

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, productions of “Matilda: The Musical” and “Kinky Boots” have been postponed. New dates are in the works, Buchbinder said.

The pandemic hit amid SLT’s $5 million capital campaign to restore the Landers Theatre and renovate its new educational facility. Buchbinder said the closure allowed for work to be completed on the theater’s front door, windows and the concession area.

“It’s been really impressive to see the community support,” she said.
