The nearly 40-year-old Springfield Glass Co. is planning a move across the Queen City that would roughly triple its space.
Springfield Glass Co. President Grant Miller said he expects the commercial glass company to close on the purchase of nearly 7 acres of land in Partnership Industrial Center West in the next month. He declined to estimate project expenses.
The site – at the corner of Success Place and Production Street, just east of Vital Farms – would be home to a planned 50,000-square-foot new headquarters building, Miller said. Springfield Glass Co. currently operates in 15,000 square feet at 2503 N. Oak Grove Ave., a northeast Springfield property the company’s former owner built in 2005.
Miller said the company has had space constraints for around five years.
"We've got materials stacked in every corner we can stack it in," he said. "One big thing is warehousing material and the second is production space for curtain wall and storefront fabrication. We're bursting at the seams in both of those respects."
Miller said the 25-employee Springfield Glass Co. needs more warehouse space as the industry trends toward larger panels of glass and the company buys materials and stores them to lock in costs.
“It’s a pretty big step for us,” he said.
Miller projected a summer 2025 opening for the new headquarters. He said Rich Kramer Construction Inc. is serving as general contractor for the project designed by Buxton Kubik Dodd Design Collective.
An interview with Grant Miller is scheduled to be published in Springfield Business Journal’s Sept. 23 print edition.
