Springfield attorneys represent American in plane purchase

Three attorneys in Husch Blackwell LLP’s Springfield office represented American Airlines Inc. in a plane purchase agreement.

Springfield partner David Agee led the team comprising local partner Amanda Tummons and associate Derek Moore, as well as Bob Stang, a Husch Blackwell partner in Washington, D.C., and Chris Sundberg, an associate in Denver, according to a news release.

The Husch Blackwell attorneys worked with American in its negotiations to buy 50 aircraft from Airbus SE. The agreement was announced last week at the Paris Air Show. Media reports estimate the order value at $7 billion, though a spokesperson for Husch Blackwell said the terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“I’m appreciative of our long-standing relationship with American Airlines and very proud of the work our team has performed for American Airlines in these type of deals, as well as in other legal matters,” Agee said in the release. “These transactions tend to be complex and high-profile deals, and where needed, we pull together subject-matter experts from across the firm to handle them, such as tax and international trade.”

Husch Blackwell has represented American in the purchase of more than 1,000 new aircraft, as well as engine and maintenance service agreements.

The latest agreement calls on American to buy 50 A321 XLR aircraft. Delivery of the planes is expected to start in 2023 and continue through 2025, replacing American’s existing Boeing 757 aircraft, according to the release.
