South-side hardware store opens

Posted online

Burnsville, Minnesota-based Northern Tool and Equipment yesterday opened its first store in the Queen City.

Located at 549 W. El Camino Alto Drive, the 22,000-square-foot hardware store is the company’s fourth in Missouri, with others operating in the St. Louis and Kansas City areas, according to a news release.

“Our new Springfield store is a sign of our growth and continued commitment in this area,” said Wade Mattson, vice president of sales and marketing at Northern Tool, in the release.

Construction work began in March, when BP Builders LLC broke ground on the store between Sam’s Club and Walmart Neighborhood Market in James River Commons. The project designed by H Design Group LLC was completed on time, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting.

Northern Tool, which sells tools for automotive, farming, trucking, food service and other industries, operates more than 100 stores in 22 states, according to its website. Media reports indicate Northern Tool’s revenue exceeds $1 billion annually. The company is privately owned by Don Kotula.

In Springfield, Northern Tool’s entrance fills one of the few remaining spots in James River Commons, located just south of James River Freeway off Campbell Avenue. A site plan provided by Stu Stenger of James River Commons developer TKG-RKS Joint Venture LLC shows three spots below 2 acres apiece are available. Other tenants in the development are Academy Sports and Outdoors, Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers and Zaxby’s.

To the south of James River Commons, past The Library Center, developers of The Ridge at Ward Branch, an estimated $500 million project, expect to break ground this year, SBJ previously reported.
