New leaders are now responsible for a nearly $3 million operating budget at The Salvation Army-Springfield.
Majs. Jon and Kris Augenstein started their roles as executive directors of the Springfield nonprofit chapter on July 6, according to a news release.
The Augensteins come to Springfield from The Salvation Army's Heartland division headquarters in Peoria, Illinois. They have 23 years of experience with the nonprofit including roles in Wichita, Kansas, and Flint, Michigan.
"As a leader, Maj. Jon values authenticity, honesty, transparency and working together with a leadership team to enhance the army’s work and ministry serving the community, especially those who are marginalized," officials said in the release. "Major Kris’ ministry passion is ministering to people, especially women and children."
The Salvation Army has a long history of appointing married couples as dual leaders.
The local Salvation Army chapter had been led on an interim basis since last year by Majs. Bob and Vicki Buttrey. They came out of retirement after Maj. Butch Frost went on medical leave after being diagnosed with cancer. Frost is now “doing well and will be serving The Salvation Army out west," officials said in the release.
Frost and wife Lisa took over leadership of the Springfield chapter in 2017.
The Salvation Army-Springfield ranked No. 15 this year on SBJ's list of the area's largest nonprofits, based on employee count. The chapter reported a $2.8 million operating budget and 48 employees. The faith-based poverty relief organization provides emergency shelter, case management, parenting classes and other services.
Utah-based gourmet cookie chain Crumbl Cookies opened its first Springfield shop; interior design business Branson Upstaging LLC relocated; and Lauren Ashley Dance Center LLC added a second location.
