PCCC gifts $830K to charities

Posted online

Price Cutter Charity Championship officials today distributed $830,356 in funding to nearly 50 children’s charities in the Ozarks.

The funds for the 48 participating nonprofits were presented during the Celebration of Sharing ceremony hosted by the McQueary family at Highland Springs Country Club. The total was down 13% from $952,000 given in 2019 to 49 charities. The golf tournament has distributed over $17.3 million to area nonprofits since its inception in 1990, according to a news release.

PCCC officials said in the release the PGA-sanctioned Korn Ferry Tour event was a successful one as it overcame challenges – including no spectators allowed – amid the coronavirus pandemic. The 31st annual tournament was held July 23-26 at Highland Springs.

“Everyone who supported this year’s tournament, from businesses to individuals, should be commended along with our charities,” PCCC Executive Director Jerald Andrews said in the release. “Almost all of our charities were impacted by the pandemic, as they had to cancel their own fundraising events and badly needed the community’s support through the tournament.”

The top five donation amounts are:
• $70,672 for Children’s Smile Center;
• $59,997 for Fellowship of Christian Athletes;
• $54,384 for Silver Dollar City Foundation;
• $49,441 for Chances of Stone County; and
• $46,861 for Legal Services of Southern Missouri.

After the tournament initially received approval in June to be the first Korn Ferry Tour event to permit fans, PGA Tour officials changed their mind a couple of weeks prior to its start, according to past Springfield Business Journal reporting.

Tournament officials were concerned sponsors might pull out of the event once the spectator decision was announced. However, Andrews said less than 10 sponsors asked for a refund. The tournament ended up with more than 450 sponsors, only down slightly from its typical sponsorship tally of around 500, according to past reporting.

The annual event raises money though corporate sponsorships, pro-am tournaments at area golf courses and ticket sales. Andrews said next year’s tournament is scheduled July 22-25 at Highland Springs.
