Volt Credit Union
The new headquarters and second branch for Volt Credit Union, formerly Community Financial Credit Union, began operations May 1 at 2624 W. Republic Road. At roughly 12,500 square feet, the building project cost around $2.5 million, according to Loretta Roney, CEO and president. Federal Construction Inc. served as general contractor, and Buxton Kubik Dodd Design Collective was project architect. The full-service financial institution offers savings, checking, auto, home and business loans, credit cards and lines of credit. Volt ranked No. 5 on Springfield Business Journal’s 2019 list of the area’s largest credit unions, published in April. Roney said, as of June 1, the credit union has $66 million in assets and 7,065 members.

Borealis Consulting LLC
Mary Overbey took her five years of experience as Missouri outreach manager for the Small Business Majority advocacy nonprofit to open Borealis Consulting LLC on April 24. Her new home-based business is the result of SBM closing its Missouri offices and eliminating her position. “I’m still continuing work on the business consulting and the ecosystem building,” she said. Startup costs for Borealis Consulting were around $1,500, Overbey said. As a sole proprietor, she helps connect small businesses with resources, conducts market assessments and provides nonprofit grant training. Overbey also signed on as the southwest Missouri broker for Justine Petersen Housing and Reinvestment Corp., a St. Louis-based firm that provides microloans under $50,000. She said she works with small-business owners in the startup phase or who may have credit issues.

Staxx and Jellybeans
A pair of retail shops owned by Meghan Chambers relocated from the south-side Farmers Park to 2630-32 S. Glenstone Ave., in Brentwood Center North. Women’s fashion store Staxx and children’s boutique Jellybeans both opened June 11 in a combined 7,550 square feet. Chambers said the move was prompted in part by the need for more space, as the two shops formerly operated out of roughly 5,000 square feet in Farmers Park. She declined to disclose startup costs or lease terms with Jared Commerical in the Brentwood Center. On JaredCommercial.com, the shopping center lists an asking lease rate of $22 per square foot. Both Staxx and Jellybeans employ eight people, Chambers said. She founded Staxx in 2004 and purchased Jellybeans in 2010; both stores moved to the Farmers Park mixed-use development in 2014.
