Open for Business: Victoria's Cafe and Tea

Victoria’s Cafe and Tea
Victoria’s Cafe and Tea owner Sheila Daniels relocated her 6-year-old business to Springfield from Tulsa, Oklahoma, on May 25. She said relocation and renovation costs were roughly $35,000 for her shop at 1550 E. Battlefield Road, Ste. F, in the Galleria Shopping Center. The cafe occupies 1,500 square feet in space formerly filled by OneMain Financial, she said, declining to disclose her five-year lease rate with Warren Davis Properties LLC. The shop’s move marks a return to the Queen City for Daniels, who moved to Tulsa from Springfield nearly 40 years ago. Daniels said she closed her Tulsa eatery, which had operated since 2015 as Victoria’s Tea Room, late last year after several months of struggling with business amid the coronavirus pandemic. The cafe menu has a variety of drinks, such as green, flowering and bubble teas, she said. Food options include soups, salads, quiche and sandwiches, as well as entrees such as parmesan chicken. Most food prices range $14-$20, according to its menu.

Springfield Contemporary Theatre
Springfield Contemporary Theatre Inc. consolidated operations with a Feb. 1 move to 2025 E. Chestnut Expressway, Ste. D. Jeffrey Mindock, development director for the 501(c)(3) nonprofit, said the organization formerly had performance space and offices at 431 S. Jefferson Ave., Ste. 136, as well as a rehearsal studio on Commercial Street and warehouse space on South New Avenue. He said relocation costs to the 4,880-square-foot space were $8,000, and SCT signed a two-year lease for an undisclosed rate with Diversity Commercial Investments LLC. The building doesn’t include an indoor theater, so performances through the 2022 season will be held at locations including The Old Glass Place, Mother’s Brewing Co. and the parking lot behind the SCT center, he said. SCT’s move is considered temporary, Mindock said, noting the three-employee organization plans to find a permanent location back in the downtown area.

Led by Executive Director Vicki Good, the ER is designed to decrease anxiety for children seeking care. Mercy recently completed the $7.5 million expansion to its Springfield hospital after general contractor McCarthy Building Cos. Inc. broke ground on the 6,300-square-foot project in August 2019. Mercy spokesperson Sonya Kullmann said staffing at the ER would fluctuate depending on demand. Dr. Anna Grimes, a pediatric ER doctor, is among the primary staff.
