Open for Business: The Quilted Cow

Posted online

The Quilted Cow
A franchise store of a Branson West-based quilting business made its Queen City debut on July 1 at 1711 W. Battlefield Road, Ste. EF. Franchisees Katie Tonarely and Jennifer Current teamed to open a new location of The Quilted Cow LLC, which marked the fourth shop overall and third franchise store for the business, which started in 2010. The Quilted Cow sells quilting materials and accessories, including fabric, supplies, precut quilting squares, kits and patterns. Along with co-owning the 4,200-square-foot Springfield shop, Tonarely said she remains an insurance agent with Aflac. She declined to disclose startup costs, noting she and Current signed a nondisclosure agreement with The Quilted Cow, which includes a franchise fee and percentage of sales. The pair signed a 10-year lease for an undisclosed rate with Davis Properties LLC. Tonarely said the 11-employee shop in the Kansas Square Shopping Center includes a classroom with 15 sewing machines to provide classes for all ages and experience levels.

Grateful Vase
After seeing floral waste at her own wedding and other events in her life, Lindsey Curry decided she wanted to repurpose floral arrangements. This led to the June 10 opening of her home-based nonprofit in Lebanon, Grateful Vase. With the help of volunteers, Curry transports flowers from weddings and other events, repurposing floral arrangements before delivering them to nursing homes and long-term care facilities around southwest Missouri and northwest Arkansas. Curry declined to disclose startup costs, adding she is the only employee but hopes to expand as the nonprofit grows. She said she plans to also deliver gift baskets to caregivers as another service of the nonprofit. Curry was inspired to start Grateful Vase after spending time in long-term care facilities while visiting her grandparents. Her grandmother mentioned the idea to her and how much she would appreciate receiving flowers, and Curry decided to create the nonprofit during a flower workshop in December.

The Social Birdy
Branson entertainment venue The Social Birdy, first announced in early 2022, had its grand opening July 3. The $5 million venture at 1250 Branson Hills Parkway is just west of several big-box retailers, such as The Home Depot and Target. Officials previously targeted a May launch for the 18,000-square-foot project, which incorporates a restaurant and bar, an 18-hole putting course, pickleball courts, golf simulator bays and a full-service golf and pickleball shop. Trey Pelz and friends Mark Mason, Matt Martin and Chris Rohr, as well as several silent partners, own the business through MMTC Development Group LLC. Springfield-based Richards Construction & Renovations LLC was general contractor on the project with Buxton Kubik Dodd Design Collective as architect. Pelz said The Social Birdy, which includes four pickleball courts on the back end of the facility, staffs around 55 employees. The menu for the restaurant includes burgers, fried and hot chicken, sandwiches, flatbreads, salads, shakes and a full bar.
