Pappy’s Place
Longtime Grant Beach neighborhood restaurant and bar Pappy’s Place is under new ownership with husband and wife Wayne and Susan Rader. The couple officially took possession Dec. 11 of the 943 N. Main St. business that has been in operation since 1926. The Raders made a $75,000 winning bid for Pappy’s Place at a Nov. 22 auction held at the restaurant. Previous owners Scott and Debra Keese announced in April they wanted to retire and listed the eatery for sale. The Raders, who also own Rader Manor, a bed-and-breakfast property at 924 N. Main St., are making their first foray into the restaurant industry. Wayne Rader said he’s maintaining Pappy’s menu of barbecue sandwiches, chili, pork tenderloin and cheeseburgers, with most items ranging from $6 to $17. Catering will be added to the six-employee business, Rader said, but there are no current plans for renovations or extensive changes.

Crossland Construction Co. Inc. built the nearly $10 million complex, with work starting in 2018. Sugarfire Smokehouse
St. Louis barbecue chain Sugarfire Smokehouse made its Springfield debut Dec. 22 at 1730 E. Republic Road, Ste. A, in the Southgate Center. The Queen City eatery marks the 15th location for the chain nationally and its eighth in Missouri, said General Manager Kevin Russell. Charlie Downs and Mike Johnson started the Sugarfire concept in 2012. Franchisees are a pair of married couples in St. Louis – David and Erin Whitman, and David and Stacey Burke – who are first-time restaurant owners. The menu features ribs, brisket, pulled pork, sausage, turkey, salmon and burgers, along with salads and daily specials. Sandwiches run from $9-$14. Seating capacity is near 100 at the 4,300-square-foot, 40-employee eatery, for which H.C. Rogers Construction Group LLC served as general contractor. The franchisees declined to disclose startup costs, but acknowledged expenses include a $50,000 franchise fee, as well as 5% royalties. They signed a five-year lease with Wilhoit Properties for an undisclosed rate.
