Nearly a year after announcing plans to relocate its flagship downtown store, Hurts Donut Co. opened Dec. 5 at 1231 E. Sunshine St., Ste. 100. The newest location for the doughnut chain, owned by husband and wife Tim and Kas Clegg, is in a retail and office center built by Sagamore Hill Development Co. LLC in 2018 at the corner of Sunshine Street and National Avenue. The restaurant fills a roughly 3,800-square-foot free-standing structure that’s been empty since the center was completed. Tim Clegg declined to disclose lease terms or startup costs. He said the new shop serves as the first drive-thru in Missouri for Hurts Donut, which also operates a south-side store at 1111 E. Republic Road, Ste. 164. Along with its variety of doughnuts, the Sunshine location, which Clegg said employs 65, offers cookies, muffins, kolaches, an espresso bar and ice cream from Eldon-based Ice Cream Factory LLC. Prices range $1.50-$6. The company has 20 stores open in 10 states, according to its website.

Kinetic Design and Development
Architecture firm Kinetic Design and Development LLC was launched Sept. 6 at 2101 W. Chesterfield Blvd., Ste. A101. Abbye Bobbett said she co-owns the venture with husband Griffin Bobbett and Adam Kreher, and they have over 30 years of combined industry experience. The trio exited Torgerson Design Partners LLC to open Kinetic Design, which fills an 1,800-square-foot office in Chesterfield Village formerly occupied by West Central Motor Freight Inc. Abbye Bobbett, daughter of Torgerson Design founder John Torgerson, declined to disclose startup costs or lease terms with Dearborn Development Inc. In addition to its architectural and interior design work, she said Kinetic Design offers development services, which include site investigations and permitting. Bobbett said with the opening of the firm, the owners wanted to expand their menu of services and provide employees with a greater work-life balance. The staff of 16 includes a couple of full-time remote and hybrid workers.

Whataburger
San Antonio, Texas-based Whataburger made its Ozarks debut with the Dec. 12 opening at 1371 U.S. Highway 60 in Republic. Alexandra Ruffo, a Whataburger spokesperson, said the eatery employs more than 100 people and is led by Operating Partner Sean Tamez. Whataburger Director of Public Relations Dash Blaker declined to disclose startup costs for the 3,746-square-foot restaurant. He said only drive-thru service is currently available, adding dine-in, curbside and delivery services will be offered in the coming weeks. Whataburger also has three Springfield restaurants in the works at 401 N. Eastgate Ave., 2355 N. Glenstone Ave. and 3880 W. Sunshine St., as well as an Ozark location at 1851 W. Marler Lane, according to officials. Blaker said all stores will be open 24/7 and plan to close only on Christmas Day. The company, which serves burgers, sandwiches, breakfast and other menu options, has more than 900 restaurants in 14 states, according to its website.
