Andy’s Frozen Custard Inc.
The newest store for Springfield-based chain Andy’s Frozen Custard Inc. opened Aug. 19 at 509 S. National Ave. The newly constructed 2,000-square-foot eatery at the intersection of National Avenue and Elm Street replaced National Art Shop, which was located on the site since 1986 before shuttering last year. The building that was demolished to make way for Andy’s also over the years was the home of J.P. Cantrell Oil Co.’s Skelly filling station and grocers Brigance Food Lane and Model Market No. 6. Andy Kuntz, CEO of the chain co-founded by his parents, John and Carol Kuntz, said the eatery pays homage to the art shop, including keeping the “N” from its sign and installing it on a wall of the new building. He said manager Michelle Daily leads a staff of 25 at the shop, which is on the edge of Missouri State University’s campus. Andy’s seventh Queen City restaurant – and 119th nationally – was designed by Kansas City-based Hufft and built by general contractor Ross Construction Group LLC for an undisclosed cost.
