The city of Nixa may bring two utility operations under its umbrella through two acquisitions.
Staff members are recommending Nixa City Council approve the purchases of RDE Water Co., as well as the water and sewer operations of the Tuscany Hills master-planned community, according to a news release. The city was approached to consider both acquisitions that, if approved, would merge into Nixa Utilities.
The city has verbal commitments in place to buy RDE for $2.5 million and the Tuscany Hills operations for $500,000. City staff are recommending that $3 million in bond funding and $500,0000 in water and wastewater department budget monies be set aside for the acquisitions. The funding proposal includes expected expenses for staff additions and maintenance, among other costs.
The RDE system includes two utility capacity wells with a current production capacity of 870 gallons per minute, as well as a storage tank and tower. The system has 1,072 resident and 66 commercial customers, according to city documents.
Included in the potential Tuscany Hills purchase would be 87 residential and three commercial customers.
"Ownership of these two systems provides a benefit to existing customers for a much higher level of service," city officials said in presentation documents. "The well and property assets allow for us to make planned improvements to our existing system at a lesser cost and shorter timeline, all while enhancing both systems."
Nixa's council was presented with the documentation during its Oct. 25 meeting. Council members will continue to discuss the potential acquisitions at its Nov. 8 and Nov. 22 meetings, according to the release.
The Republic School District is on track to open its Intermediate School for fifth- and sixth-grade students for the 2025-26 academic year.
