MSU board to vote on contractor for multimillion-dollar project

Posted online

The Missouri State University Board of Governors is scheduled to vote this week on a general contractor for a multimillion-dollar performing arts pavilion.

Carson-Mitchell Inc. submitted the low bid of $5.1 million for the project, slated to be constructed in the plaza adjacent to Craig Hall, according to the board's March 17 agenda. MSU staff members are recommending approval.

Construction documents call for a 7,700-square-foot, open-air steel structure with fixed tiers for 350 removable seats and a permanent Tent Theatre stage. The contractor also would make roughly 10,000 square feet of site improvements, including storm water and landscaping.

Carson-Mitchell previously worked with project architect Patterhn Ives LLC on a renovation to MSU's Ellis Hall academic building, according to the agenda.

In voting early last year to approve Patterhn Ives as consultant for the pavilion project, the MSU board kicked off one of the key projects in the school's $250 million Onward, Upward capital campaign.

The Tent Theatre project was important to actor and MSU alumnus John Goodman, who’s serving as the Onward, Upward campaign chair. Goodman, who visited MSU for the campaign announcement, had performed at the Tent Theatre in the 1970s. He previously donated an undisclosed amount toward the arts pavilion development, according to past reporting.

The arts pavilion work is scheduled for completion by the spring 2022 semester, according to the board's agenda.
