MSU amphitheater to be named after John Goodman

Missouri State University yesterday broke ground on its new Judith Enyeart Reynolds Arts Park, with an announcement that the project's amphitheater would be named in honor of celebrity alumnus John Goodman.

The arts park featuring the John Goodman Amphitheatre is slated for completion in 2022, according to a news release.

“This new arts park and permanent amphitheater are much welcome additions to our historic Tent Theatre,” MSU President Clif Smart said in the release. “Our campus and larger community will have a vibrant and comfortable space to enjoy not only Tent Theatre and other productions, but also many special events for years to come.”

The MSU Board of Governors last month approved Carson-Mitchell Inc. as general contractor for the project, which calls on a 7,700-square-foot, open-air steel structure with fixed tiers for 350 removable seats and a permanent Tent Theatre stage. Carson-Mitchell submitted the low bid of $5.1 million for the project, which is being designed by Patterhn Ives LLC.

Goodman, an actor known for his roles in "Roseanne," "The Big Lebowski" and other television shows and movies, visited the MSU campus in October 2019 to help the university launch its $250 million Onward Upward campaign. Goodman at the time said he contributed an undisclosed amount to the campaign.

“I owe Missouri State – not that I can feel compelled particularly to give anything back, but it gives me great pleasure to do so,” Goodman said in an interview with Springfield Business Journal during the 2019 campaign launch event. “My life started here.”
