Missouri lawmaker seeks to cut funding for public libraries

Republican House Budget Committee Chair Cody Smith is seeking to cut funding for public libraries amid a fight about books.

Smith's budget move would cut all $4.5 million in state funding that public libraries would receive next fiscal year.

His proposal comes as state and school libraries are suing to overturn a new Missouri law that bans sexually explicit material in school libraries, according to The Associated Press.
