The Salvation Army's Springfield chapter has been selected for a grant from Mooresville, North Carolina-based home improvement retailer Lowe's Cos. Inc. (NYSE: LOW).
The local chapter of the Salvation Army is among 100 community projects chosen for Lowe's annual Hometowns program, according to a news release. The grant amount is $42,000, said Hollee Ellis, development director for Salvation Army Springfield.
The funding is earmarked for the nonprofit's Family Enrichment Center, which provides shelter for homeless individuals and families.
"Receiving the Lowe's Hometown grant is a transformative moment for our Family Enrichment Center," said Maj. Amos Shiels, who leads the Salvation Army Springfield with wife Maj. Cyndi Shiels, in the release. "With this grant, we can make significant improvements that will have a lasting impact on our community, helping families rebuild their lives with dignity and hope."
Through its Hometowns program, Lowe's is planning to invest $100 million in local communities through 2026. Salvation Army Springfield is one of two nonprofits selected this year in Missouri, with the other being Promise Community Homes in St. Louis.
The Springfield chapter of The Salvation Army ranked No. 19 in Springfield Business Journal's 2023 list of the area's largest charitable nonprofits. The faith-based relief agency reported a $3 million operating budget, 45 employees and 725 local volunteers for the list published last year.
Schools, athletic facilities, businesses and infrastructure are among the featured projects.
